  1. RE: Star Trek and Doctor Who… By the time this episode ran Star Trek had completed it’s run, so it is entirely possible that the communicators where inspired by Star Trek.
I had a similar conversation with some friends of mine. To what extent has Doctor Who influenced other science fiction serials. Star Trek was in development at least as early as 1964, and in any case Doctor Who probably wasn’t well known in the US until well after Trek had finished it’s run. In both New Who and later Trek serials both series have referenced each other.

  2. W4JKF Sometimes it’s very important to remember the context of what was going on at the time..the best we can do as just an American crew is figure out what was going on with us through mom. I took a Doctor Who class this year to get more of that context into my system..actually about to take a Star Trek class from the same professor offering it!  http://www.rotoloclass.com/#!trekclass/c2te if your curious.

Sci-fi almost always is inspired by what happens to be going on at the time that it was made. This is why I always get surprised when suddenly an environmental message comes up when if you hear us talk today you would think we never cared at all! The influence of each other can be felt in various ways even as far as the comics having the 11th Doctor meet the TNG crew for instance. So I suspect no modern Sci-fi can really get away without at least giving nods to other things given that really they are going to do it unintentionally anyways!
