Just how well did Nintendo do at E3?

Reggie sunglasses

While fans everywhere will debate who won E3 till they’re blue in the face there is one thing that cannot be denied, that Nintendo fired their big guns and hit the target. Nintendo’s presentation at E3 with all their reveals and Treehouse Live showed us way more content at one time than ever before.  Nintendo really found a way to show fans that not only are they still a relevant company in the video world but also a contender for the top spot, but just how well did they do? Miyamoto’s comments should explain a lot.

“In past E3 shows, the main method of communication was through the media that attended the show. However, recently we have also started to actively disclose information directly to consumers. A good example was the video we have just shown, which you can watch on our website at any time. Another example, “Treehouse Live,” is an online program featuring video game developers giving out information on the latest video games from our E3 booth. People enjoyed it through new game program channels on Twitch or YouTube. The “Nintendo Digital Event,” which we broadcast on the morning of the first day of E3, was viewed 4 to 5 million times, and the total views of our E3-related videos numbered in the tens of millions. This means that our messages reached a large number of people all over the world through the Internet, not only the people who attended E3 events.”

You read correctly, “tens of millions,” a huge number which shows how much of an impact Nintendo had in just a few days.  Nintendo is truly showing just how much of a survivor it’s been because every time it is doubted it finds a way to rise from the ashes and find a way to become better than ever before.

Another Nintendo Patent

Nintendo Patent

We just recently had news of Nintendo patenting some sort of smartphone like technology and now we see another patent to add to their ideas. Apparently Nintendo has filed a patent which provides 3D potential on 2D devices. This is done by using a combination of special glasses and a camera on the television. It sounds like the camera tracks the eye’s movements and using the glasses it’ll project the 2D display in 3D.

While nothing else is known about this the combination of patents and previous comments suggestion Nintendo plans to expand leads me to believe that Nintendo is evolving from just a Video Game company to a company that offers a wide variety of products.

Little Mac Fights with Style

Recent pictures showed that Little Mac also has an alternate costume he can fight in. As you can see the costume is very similar to the one he was wearing in the animated video used in his debut to the game.

While the costume is interesting it could be one of many alternate costumes that join Link’s Skyward Sword Tunic seen earlier. Sakurai had this to say about the topic: “Looks like some of you noticed that this version of Little Mac wasn’t shown at E3. There are many things, like Link’s Skyward Sword tunic design I posted earlier, that haven’t been revealed yet.”

It sounds like several characters will get alternate costumes. Some ideas I personally find interesting are Ike’s Ranger and Vanguard outfits, Mario’s Dr. Mario outfit, Zelda’s Twilight Princess Outfit, and possibly alternate costumes for Megaman reflecting new powers.

It’s also possible the comment was referring to something new that we cannot possibly foresee. With all the surprises included in this game it’s highly likely there are several more things in store for us that will completely blow us away.

Hyrule Warriors News 2.0

Agatha

Hyrule Warriors Update 2.0

So with all the hype on the Zelda series we got a little bit more news on the upcoming title Hyrule Warriors. We now know that Agitha the bug collector from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be a playable character. I know that fans have mixed feelings about this, some thinking that if the game includes such an unexpected character what else does it have to offer while others think why of all characters someone would include her. I think this is an interesting inclusion to the game and in typical Dynasty Warriors fashion there’s going to be several more to come. Also with her usage of bugs in combat she’ll stand out as a truly unique character and I think it hints for a lot of diversity in the game.

The second thing we found out is a newcomer character Lana which is the blue hair woman seen in a lot of the pictures. She’s going to be a magic user and also use a parasol for combat. Also we know that the characters Zant and the Dragon Boss Argorok will appear in the game. Seeing all these characters from Twilight princess makes me even more excited for the game but I’m also hoping to see some characters from other Zelda games.

Nintendo Prepares for Comic Con

nintendologo

So Nintendo has been the focus of a lot of gaming news the past few weeks and it looks like they plan to keep the hype going. Nintendo has teased that there will be a “few special surprises” about the new Super Smash Brothers game that will be revealed at Comic Con. My guess is this will be a new character reveal but something else too.

Obviously the character reveals are huge so Nintendo is sure to have some planned for Comic Con but the fact that it didn’t specifically say character reveals makes me think that we’ll get something more. I think that we’re going to get a release date for Super Smash Brothers Wii U and possible a new mode in the game will be revealed. Overall I’m excited and can’t wait for what’s in store at Comic Con which is from July 24th to the 27th so we won’t have to wait long.

What we learned about Nintendo at E3

What we learned about Nintendo at E3 2014

Mario:

While it was clearly stated there will be no new Mario games we still managed to get one and it was surprising indeed. Mario Maker is coming to the Wii U in 2015 and it allows gamers to create their own 2D Mario Levels. Gamers will have the choice to either use the new Wii U style graphics or the old but good first Mario graphics. While that’s really about all that is known it’s enough to really make the game a real attention grabber.

Yoshi:

We got to see a lot more of the new Yoshi game coming out and it really looks like it takes advantage of Yoshi’s abilities to really make this game have a similar gameplay to Mario but with a lot of major changes to adjust to Yoshi. Also the co-op multiplayer really has a lot of options the most notable one is the ability to eat your partner and turn them into a ball of yarn and throw them. It looks like this game has a lot of possibilities.

Toad:

Finally Toad gets his own game.  Coming around the Holiday this year is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. This game was based off of the toad mini games featured on Super Mario 3D world. For those who aren’t familiar with the concept the gamer used the gamepad to view the game map and navigate Toad to all the treasures. From personal experience I can say that you will have to stand up and really use the game pad to play this game which is why I think this game will be a nice addition to the Wii U. Finally a game that really starts to take advantage of the gamepad and to actually make Toad a stand a lone character.

Hyrule Warriors:

We got to see a lot more gameplay of Hyrule Warriors but the biggest things we learned was the fact that Zelda is a playable character along with Midna from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. You can also obtain items during the game which is a nice inclusion from the Legend of Zelda games. Finally we also get a release date as gamers can play this interesting crossover on September 26, 2014.

Legend of Zelda:

Yes we actually got two Legend of Zelda console games. Legend of Zelda for Wii U was introduced as the first ever open world Zelda game. The game features a beautiful map and unlimited possibilities instead of the standard do one level then go to another format. Also we have an interesting twist. We saw a character that we assumed was Link but due to the lack of the green outfit and a sword it was hard to tell. Also we got an official statement on it basically saying who said it was Link? So if it’s not Link who is it and where is Link? Finally all the animation we saw at E3 was actual in game footage.

Kirby:

We saw some gameplay of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse which looks interesting as gamers can use the gamepad to draw paths for Kirby to take in the game. Seems interesting but still little is known about the game.

X:

The game officially called Xenoblade Chronicles X has been postponed to 2015 but it’s clearly a battle for earth against some sort of alien invasion determined to wipe out all human life. From the trailer it’s clear the same amazing graphics from Xenoblade Chronicles will return and also possibly the same deep and highly involved storyline.

Bayonetta 2:

We got a new trailer for Bayonetta 2 which looks interesting and seeing more of the main character personally makes me more excited for the game. Also the game comes with a copy of the first game which includes new content such as costumes from Zelda, Metroid and attacks based off of the Nintendo games such as being able to summon Boswer’s foot to smash enemies. Now the e shop download does NOT include the first game so if you want the two for one deal and the Nintendo content you have to get the physical copy.

Star Fox:

Yes that’s right there’s Star Fox news. We don’t know much yet but it’s confirmed there is a Star Fox game coming to the Wii U and it’s definitely going to have Arwing dog fights like many Star Fox games before. We really don’t know much beyond that though but hey finally a new Star Fox game.

Amiibo:

This new idea takes figures of Nintendo characters to add to the game content. For Super Smash Brothers you can use them to summon personally customized versions of your fighters Mario, Marth, Link, Pit and more to fight with or against you. You can customize their moves and they level up with how much they are used. Amiibo’s work by touching the figure to your gamepad which then adds the content directly to the game. Amiibo’s will also be used for Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10 (which was announced in that brief statement about Amiibo’s), and will have a port to use them for the 3DS. The prices will be similar to Spyro and Disney Infinite figures around $10 to $15.

Super Smash Brothers:

New fighters were confirmed we now have Mii Fighters which come in three forms: Sword, Brawler, and Gunner which speaks for itself. We also get Palutena from the Kid Icarus series which was something covered in one of TSCN’s first articles and Pac Man. So we get to see a fatal fourway between four of the most iconic characters in history Mario, Megaman, Pac Man, and Sonic. We also know the 3DS version will come out October 3rd, 2014 later than what was said earlier and the Wii U version is coming around the holidays.

Pokemon:

So far not much to be honest just a November 21st, 2014 release date for Japan and everywhere else on the 28th and a glimpse of Primal Groudon and Kyogre. Also we found out that Sabelye will get a mega form which not all that exciting considering it’s a rarely used pokemon.

Fire Emblem:

I was really hoping to find out a lot more about the upcoming Shin Megami X Fire Emblem game however we got nothing. Oddly enough while Fire Emblem is my absolute favorite series, and I even played Shin Megami games specifically to learn what that series has to add to Fire Emblem, I’m not worried. We did find out that the game is still in production it’s just we can’t find out any more about it because it could get people fired.

Steam:

A new game from the creators of Fire Emblem involves a task force assembled by Abraham Lincoln to stop aliens. Obviously this game will have some humor to it. Also it is a strategy game that is turn based and has a steampunk theme to it. It does appear interesting but there’s not a lot known about it.

Hyrule Warriors News

Hyrule Warriors

Hyrule Warriors News

So with E3 just around the corner we’re already getting a lot of new information about the upcoming game Hyrule Warriors. This crossover between Dynasty Warriors and Legend of Zelda has many fans wondering what kind of game this will be and has millions of fans eagerly waiting for more information.
We know a little more about the series. First of all we know via twitter that the game will feature Zelda voice acting so they are not going to do anything crazy like make Link talk. That’s a huge relief. Second we have reason to believe that this game is going to lean closer to Dynasty Warriors gameplay rather than Legend of Zelda with this comment from Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma: “There wouldn’t be a reason for making it a Warriors [game] otherwise, right? I wanted Tecmo Koei to make a Zelda game that I can’t make. And for this reason, I asked them to ‘give it more of a Warriors approach.” This may or may not work well. Sure it does add a unique entry to the series but it also may give the impression that this is simply a knock off of the series. We’ll just have to play the game to be sure.
I’m still really excited for the game; however, with such a change to the series comes great risk. The Legend of Zelda series changed its format one time with Legend of Zelda II and over 20 years later Nintendo will try to drastically change the format a second time. Will this go over well is hard to say but without a doubt the game will be exciting. The question is, will it be Zelda?

Nintendo’s Newest Gaming Enhancement

Amiibo

New Nintendo Hardware

It looks like Nintendo plans to go the route of Spyro and Disney by adding figures which can be used with games to enhance the gaming experience. While it’s not revealed how exactly Nintendo plans to accomplish this we know it’s highly possible that it will be included with the Wii U version of the new Super Smash Brothers game.

Personally I’m not sure about this idea. If done well it could really add a lot to the games with added content and possible collective merchandise to go with the game. As a collector myself that aspect really appeals to me, but Samuel addressed a concern that I also had with this new development. Samuel feels that this is just a ploy to make up for Nintendo’s monetary issues. I personally don’t care but I feel like it could possibly make Nintendo rush this idea and mess it up to the point of disaster.

I can see this idea possibly going very well for Pokemon with so many possible figures to make but I struggle to see how this idea can be applied to games like Zelda, Mario, Golden Sun and Fire Emblem.

Avengers 2 is Halfway Done

Avengers 2

Avengers 2 is Halfway done

Joss Whedon has tweeted that he is halfway through shooting Avengers 2. This is in the mist of news that Josh Brolin will be playing Thanos who will appear in Avengers 2 along with the new characters Vision, QuickSilver, Scarlet Witch, and of course Ultron. We also know that The Hulk will play a much bigger role to the movie than in Avengers 1.

With all the info we have on Avengers 2: Age of Ultron it’s clear that this movie is going to be detailed and very involved. If done well it could easily surpass the first Avengers which is an incredible accomplishment, but it could still fail and have too much in it for fans to follow.

In the previous movie all Marvel had to establish was Hawkeye who was only previously used in Thor before the movie’s release. In the sequel we have several characters that will appear in the movie to go with the already returning characters. It’s clear that the movie has great potential and Whedon is talented enough to make it happen but he still dances on a thin line between greatness and disaster.

Updates on Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Mega Evolution

Update on Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

So as you can see from the image Swampert and Sceptile will gain mega evolutions to complete mega evolutions for all the generation three starters. Sceptile’s Mega evolution will add a Dragon type which will help with super effective fire type moves but increase the weakness to ice and add a weakness to Fairy and Dragon Type moves so overall type wise it might actually make the weaker. As for Mega Swampert it’ll still be a Water/Ground type but from how it looks it is fair to assume it’s going to be a huge increase to its defense stat.

Three more mega evolutions have been confirmed first is Mega Diancie. Diancie is a special event pokemon not yet released in the U.S so not a whole lot is known about it, but the huge bit of news is that Groudon and Kygore are getting mega evolutions. While we don’t know what those forms look like we do know it’s going to have an ancient prehistoric theme to their appearance.

While this is all the confirmed news we also can see from the images above that the new Pokemon Games will keep the same format as Pokemon X and Y with 3D battles and gameplay.  This makes me really excited for the Secret Base aspect of the original games. Making a secret base and seeing it in 3D will really evolve an already popular aspect that we haven’t seen in a long time. I don’t count Generation four secret bases because the underground aspect really killed it for me.
