Why Chrom is not playable in Smash

Chrom

So Sakurai explained more details as to why Chrom is not a playable character in the new Super Smash Brothers game.

“We’ve just announced two new characters who will be joining the fray in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. One is Robin, the avatar from Fire Emblem: Awakening, and the other is Lucina, a swordswoman who plays an important role in the same title. I’ll skip over the details.”

“What? Not Chrom!?” I suspect a lot of you will ask. Of course, Chrom is quite popular, being the protagonist of FE:A and all. However, I chose Robin and Lucina, and I will elaborate on my reasoning.”

“Robin appears in the game as a Tactician and functions much like a Mystic Knight (note: FF terminology, but equivalent to magic swordsman). I thought to utilize his all-around nature by assigning swordplay to his Smash attacks and magic tomes to his special attacks–that is, allow him to use magic.”

“His neutral special is thunder magic that grows stronger the larger you charge it. He uses fire magic for his side special, and wind magic for recovery as his up special. Although Robin doesn’t use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn’t the first time I’ve given moves to a character that they don’t use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title.”

“I also implemented the system used in FE:A, in which tomes break after overuse. Likewise, I included a similar system for the Levin Sword, which breaks after a certain number of uses. However, both the tomes and the Levin Sword will quickly regenerate after a set period of time.”

“Lucina uses the same techniques as Marth, a fighter with whom I’m sure most of you are already familiar. I even went so far as to make their strength, speed, and special attacks almost identical.

However, what sets Lucina apart is the fact that the strength of her attacks is uniform along the blade. Marth’s playstyle emulates the elegant swordplay of a fencer by dealing more damage when he strikes with the tip of his blade, but the damage Lucina deals is evened out. Thus, I think that Lucina will be much easier than Marth for novice players to play with.”

“I played all the way through FE:A and really wanted to include a character from that rich cast in Smash Bros. Naturally, I considered adding Chrom to the roster, but the decision wasn’t easy by any means.”

“At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics.

Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work. From standards to specials, grabs to throws, all aspects of his moveset just fell into place. Not only did he possess characteristics unlike other fighters, but he also captured the essence of the Fire Emblem series. It was perfect!”

“In the end, if a game isn’t fun, then there’s no point. Of course, it would be really easy to make a game by churning out a ton of similar characters, but that’s not how I produce games.”

“Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth’s alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters’ names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup.”

“However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!”

So not only was Chrom excluded because he risked being too similar to the other Fire Emblem characters but Lucina was almost a skin for Marth for the same reason. In my opinion Chrom should have been a skin for Marth since they are very similar but I can’t complain after all we have four Fire Emblem characters in this game and Robin’s Final Smash does include Chrom in a way that makes a nice tribute to the dual attack feature introduced in Fire Emblem Awakening.

Fire Emblem Burns in Super Smash Brothers

FE Smash

So the new announcement for Super Smash Brothers was more than expected. We didn’t just confirm one character as expected but two new characters and the return of the Veteran Captain Falcon, but who were the two new characters?

Obviously if you don’t know you’re thinking one of them is Chrom. Afraid not. The two new characters are Lucina, and Robin the My Unit character both from Fire Emblem Awakening. Lucina honestly seems like a duplicate of Marth but not much was seen of her. Robin however looks really interesting with a combination of long distance magic attacks and short range sword attacks. Robin looks like a really adaptable character and personally as a Fire Emblem fan I’m overjoyed at the news but I honestly think Robin will be an interesting character to use.

However, this article comes with a theory. This is twice now we’ve seen anime style cutscenes to reveal new characters the first being Palutena at E3 where she comes in to rescue Pit from Link. Now Robin is rescuing Lucina from Captain Falcon. Honestly while they are nice it seems like a lot of effort just to announce a new character so I’m wondering if this has anything to do with a potential story mode for the game. As awesome as these short clips look I’m really hoping that’s the case.

Little Mac Fights with Style

Recent pictures showed that Little Mac also has an alternate costume he can fight in. As you can see the costume is very similar to the one he was wearing in the animated video used in his debut to the game.

While the costume is interesting it could be one of many alternate costumes that join Link’s Skyward Sword Tunic seen earlier. Sakurai had this to say about the topic: “Looks like some of you noticed that this version of Little Mac wasn’t shown at E3. There are many things, like Link’s Skyward Sword tunic design I posted earlier, that haven’t been revealed yet.”

It sounds like several characters will get alternate costumes. Some ideas I personally find interesting are Ike’s Ranger and Vanguard outfits, Mario’s Dr. Mario outfit, Zelda’s Twilight Princess Outfit, and possibly alternate costumes for Megaman reflecting new powers.

It’s also possible the comment was referring to something new that we cannot possibly foresee. With all the surprises included in this game it’s highly likely there are several more things in store for us that will completely blow us away.

Some Megaman updates

Megaman Smash

Megaman Final Smash Megamen unit

A recent picture of the latest Super Smash Brothers game revealed a very interesting fact. Megaman’s final smash units all the megaman versions from the classic that you see as the playable character in the game to the other versions such as X, and Megaman.EXE.

Is this a quick and easy way to pay tribute to all fans of Megaman? Yeah of course it is but who cares because it’s great to see that the whole legacy of Megaman is used in the game. Further news regarding Megaman is the fact that now Wii U owners can download copies of Megaman Battle Network 3 Blue and/or White. The reason for this specific game in the series was due to the popularity of this specific game out of the six.

Onslaught of Smash Brothers news

Super-Smash-Brothers-Logo-Wii-U-3DS

Lots of Smash Brothers news

So first off we now know that the Super Smash Brothers 3DS game will be released this summer while the Wii U version will be released around winter time.  Seems a bit odd at first but it’s understandable.  This is probably a way to get players to purchase both versions and rather than paying for them both at once, space them out to make the purchase more tempting and less pricy at one time.

For the new multiplayer news we find out for random online battles you can battle in two modes. For Fun, or For Glory.  For Fun is like any multiplayer battle, but For Glory puts the players in Final Destination with no items.  For Glory is definitely an interesting twist focusing simply on combat ability which will be more important with the new combos this version will have.  The 3DS version will have a unique multiplayer mode where for five minutes players will travel around the map and gain powerups by defeating random enemies. After the time limit the players go head to head so those who gain more powerups will have a significant advantage so this multiplayer mode is all about being able to maneuver quickly and effectively in order to defeat enemies as fast as possible.

Then we got some character news. First of all Shiek and Zelda are now two separate characters. So one cannot transform into the other. All transformations are taken out of the game so not only does this take out the well known Zelda/Shiek character but also we see Samus, and Zero Suit Samus separated. This also applied to the Pokemon Trainer because Squirtle and Bulbasaur are out. Charizard is now its own character and will join the fighting roster.  Also Charizard and Lucario will have their mega forms from Pokemon X and Y, but how that will affect the Pokemon is still unknown. My guess is their final smash attack will transform the pokemon and power up their moves.  Finally we get two confirmed characters Yoshi is returning and the new character Greninja, the Dark/water pokemon from Pokemon X and Y and the final evolution of the 6th generation water starter Froakie.

A lot of news in Super Smash Brothers and many of it was great, but on a personal note I’m a little disappointed because of the lack of Fire Emblem news in it. With the 3DS version featuring a level from Fire Emblem Awakening it leaves me to believe that a character from that game will show up, and if I’m right then that also means that we have a lot more to learn about the Super Smash Brothers roster so there’s still a lot we don’t know and we don’t have long before we can get our hands on the game.

Super Smash Combos

Super Smash Combos

Remember when using characters like Fox and Link you could bombard your enemies with a fury of attacks by mashing the A button? Well those days are over.  With news of the new Super Smash Brothers game coming almost daily we now know that the newest version will feature combo attacks. So instead of button mashing you actually have to execute a series of combinations in order to use more powerful attacks.

This should add a huge change to the game as a whole. Now that the characters have combo attacks weaker characters might have some powerful attacks that can be unleashed which can also help to add more balance to the roster as a whole.

Two tiny characters coming to the new Smash Brothers

little-mac

Two tiny characters confirmed for the new Smash Brothers

So we got a couple of new confirmations about the upcoming smash brothers games. The first being the return of Diddy Kong. In a new picture revealed on the Super Smash Brothers webpage we finally see Diddy in action. This little speedy character certainly added his own brand of chaos to the super smash brothers roster in brawl and he’s come back for more. Looks like he’ll also have a lot of the same moves so for those who liked using this character things are looking good.

The second character is a bit more surprising. Little Mac from the lesser known Nintendo game “Punch Out” makes his way to the roster. Like Wii Fit Trainer, and Villager many fans are a little uncertain about using lesser known characters for the fighting game, but after seeing him in action it looks like a good choice. Little Mac is very quick and powerful on the ground, able to execute several powerful attacks with ease. He has a variety of punches and a knock out meter that powers up during battle that can execute a powerful attack when full; however, he is weak in the air so he is a character to keep on his feet which is understandable since he is a boxer. This tiny character is sure to prove that big things come in small packages.

Palutena as a Super Smash Brothers Character?

palutena

Palutena as a Super Smash Brothers Fighter?

Recent pictures reveal Palutena, a character from Kid Icarus, as a character that will appear in the new Super Smash brothers game, but without any official statements we don’t know for sure what purpose she serves. It is possible she is the newest fighter to join the Super Smash Brothers Roster, or she could just be an assist trophy.

For those not familiar with the Kid Icarus series, Palutena is a goddess that Pit serves in order to stop the forces of evil from attacking the human race. She gives Pit the ability to fly for five minutes at a time, and stays out of combat. So what do you hope for? Do you want her as a playable character, or are you hoping that she is an assist trophy?
